On to Arizona!

Jan 22 - 30....We are out of the state of California! We spent the last 5 night parked in the desert of Quartzsite, AZ on BLM land (that means no hookups - electric, sewer or water). We made good us of our Generator & Inverter so we had all the comforts of home with just a slight smell of diesel. We met us with some friend from Houston (Eugene & MaryKay) They had their motorhome so we were parked next to each other. We spent our time taking in the huge RV Show and all the local vendors. It's very hard to describe what the little town of Quartzsite looks like this time of the year. There are thousands of RV campers parked every where!!! We had a great time shopping and visiting and we even had a campfire every night. We took a day trip to Parker (about 40 miles away). We dropped off MaryKay at the casino, Mike & Eugene golfed at Emerald Canyon and Dixie practiced hitting balls. Monday we headed up the road to Lake Havasu City, AZ where we will spend the month of Feb. Dixie's parents stay in a park model there for a few month in the winter and we will be parked in the same park. It's right on the Lake so we are hoping for warm weather. Dixie's brother & daughter were also there for the weekend. We spent some time at the pool, the lake & teaching Lexi how to ride her new bike with training wheels. And of course we did have a motorhome problem --- when driving to Lake Havasu we heard a knocking sound coming from a front wheel so today we are trying to get that checked out. We thought since we had a new motorhome that we shouldn't have these problems but I guess that's not the case!

The Classic Golf Course - this photo doesn't do it justice. The tournament was sponsored by Chrysler - there were cars everywhere (including this one in the water)! Posted by Picasa

Our last week in California!

Jan 15 - 21....Back in the Palm Springs area. Sunday night we stayed at Desert Pools RV in Desert Hot Springs where we had friends that we met on the road over for dinner. On Monday we parked next to a Motel in Palm Desert. (a friend of ours is staying here while he works the golf tourney - he sells golf memorabilia). On Tue we met up with friends from Montana (Jim & Diane) and went to the practice rounds for the Bob Hope Classic at the Classic Club. On Thursday we took the motor home in to have some warranty items looked at while we all went to the Golf Tournament again. The tournament is being played at 4 different courses - Thursday we went to the LaQuinta Country Club which was were the celebrities were playing with some of the pros. A few of the celebrities we saw were .....Mathew McConaughey, Craig T. Nelson, Samuel L. Jackson, Rush Limbaugh, Yogi Beara, Roger Clemens (the Rocket from Houston) and my personal favorite Michael Bolton!!! Mike did something he wouldn't normally do - he had Roger Clemens sign his Texas Longhorn cap! All in all we had a great time. On Thursday we moved to Indian Waters RV park in Indio. Dixie's parents drove over on Friday from Lake Havasu for a visit. The guys are at the golf tourney again today (this time at the new Classic course) while us girls are staying with Lexi (our niece). We are going to dinner tonight to celebrate Dixie's 49th Birthday!!!! My birthday present from Mike was a book on 'Beginners Women's Golf'. I might get better someday so I can actually play a round! We head out on Monday to spend a few days in Quartzsite, AZ. There is a LARGE RV show there this week. Literally thousands of RV camped out in the desert. Next Saturday we will arrive at Lake Havasu, AZ and spend the month of Feb. there.

Mike at Joshua Tree National Park (I tried one with the self timer but since it was sitting on the card roof it was a bit too crooked)! Posted by Picasa

49 Palms Oasis Hike Posted by Picasa

Twentynine Palms/Joshua Tree National Park

Jan 9 -13....We arrived at Twentynine Palms RV Park on Sunday afternoon. We have gone on 2 hikes in the Joshua Tree National Park. The first one to "49 Palms Oasis" which was 3 miles roundtrip. It was up and down most of the way - all desert until you reach an area that has several large palm trees and even some running water! It was an truely an oasis as it was surrounded by desert & rock. The next hike was to "Lost Horse Mine". This was a 4 mile roundtrip, again uphill. It was an active gold mine from 1893-1936. There are several remains/structures still standing. We enjoyed the view while we ate our peanut butter sandwhich (we didn't want to carry up much more than that)! We have practiced our golf swing a couple of time as there is a golf course connected to this RV resort...not sure how much we have improved! This park also has a full exercise room (which is very rare) so we have taken advantage of that serveral times. Our muscles are feeling the pain of hiking, lifting weights, and swinging the golf club. We may try and get one more hike in before we leave on Sunday. There is a very large Marine base just north of the RV park - we can see why as the terrain around here is very similar to photos we have received from our son in Afghanistan. The weather is a bit cooler here than in Palm Springs so we look forward to going back there on Sunday. Next week is the Bob Hope Classic Golf Tournament which we plan to attend!

Life in Southern California!

Jan 4 - 8.....The weather has been fantastic in southern CA (warmer than normal). We have enjoyed the pool/hot springs a few times, hiked in Long Canyon, and went to one of the casinos and to see an Elvis Impersonator! The show was in one of the lounges - Ronnie East was the impersonator and we talked to him briefly before the show and found out he was from Houston and went to a high school near Mike. He left Houston and worked as "Elvis" in Nashville, Las Vegas and then Palm Springs. He had a great voice & made a really good Elvis, singing for for 2 hrs. Yesterday Dixie's brother & daughter came to visit us so we spent time at the pool & the playground. They also spent the night with us. Mike & I went to visit friends that we met while at Camp Verde in Oct. There are now at the park next to us - we had dinner and played some cards, having a great time. Today we are packing up and moving to Twenty-Nine Palms, about 50 miles up the road!

A deer that crossed the road in front of us. This was the second one - good thing we weren't going very fast due to the snow on the road. Posted by Picasa

Our Christmas Vacation!

Dec 22 - Jan 3....Yes I know, it's pass time for an update! We had a wonderful Christmas and New Years with family. We didn't have a 'white' Christmas - there was some snow on the ground when we arrived in Great Falls, MT but it melted quickly. The weather was above freezing the whole trip! We really enjoyed visiting with Dixie's family in Montana and had some fantastic meals & good times. We went out to the 'farm' on the 26th for 2 days and then back to Great Falls where we were scheduled to fly to Seattle on the 29th......Well 3 days later we still hadn't made it on a flight (we were at the airport each day at 545am). On Saturday the flight canceled and we decided if we were ever going to get out of Great Falls we better rent a car and drive to Seattle. So at 650am on Sat. we started our drive to the lovely 'rainy' city of Seattle. The tempature was in the 40's when we left Great Falls but 60 miles later we ran into snow, sleet and rain. The roads were snowy & slushy until we reached Idaho (pretty slow going). From there we had some sun, rain and... snow again at the pass in Washington. At 45opm we reach our daughters in North Bend - from there we continued our drive to Seattle to drop off the car! At 730p we were finally at our destination. It was worth the trip as we were able to spend a couple of days with Micheala, Tim & the grandkids! We flew from SEA to Palm Springs on the 2nd where we spent the night at Dixie's brothers. Finally today (the 3rd) we got our motorhome out of storage and parked once again at Desert Pools RV Park in Desert Hot Springs. We welcomed the warm weather again by storing our coats! Even though it wasn't that cold in Montana and Washington we are glad to be back in warmer weather. We will stay in this park until Sunday when we will move to Twenty Nine Palms, a bit further north, near Joshua Tree National Forest (it's time to do some hiking and work off what we gained while on vacation)!
