Harvest in Full Swing!

Aug 17 - 22...The Wheat Harvest is in full swing! It's been hot and dry for the most part and the days have been long. Mike is still averaging 13-14 hr days and has work 8 days straight this go round. It did rain a bit one day last week so they started in the afternoon the next day. The pictures this week are "Mike at work". The one is "dinner (supper in this part of the country) in the field". We take the food to the field and they take about 30 minutes to eat and then back to work until dark or later. The other photos are of Mike unloading his grain truck. Dixie & her parents went to Great Falls on Friday to pick up her brother & niece from California and returned on Saturday. On Sunday we had family pictures taken in the Wheat field and around the tractors - it's hard to get all 13 of us smiling at the same time - it was a challenge for the photographer to get the photo's taken when the sun was just right! That's all for this week.

On the Job!

Aug 10-16....What's new this week? Dixie began a series of Accupuncture treatments to see if that helps the neck and arm problem. After one treatment, the jury is still out on if it helps any. The next one is tomorrow! The weather got cold & wet (in the 40's at night) a few days last week so it stopped the harvest for a few days. By Sunday it was warm again and they were able to start harvesting the Barley on Monday. Mike got his "on the job training for truck driving" on Monday so he now has 2 days (13hrs each) under his belt. He drives a truck in the field for the combines to unload in and then takes it to a grain bin and dumps it from the truck and augers it into the bin. Of course he got to start with Barley (it's very itchy)! Hopefully there will only be a couple more days of that and then they can move onto the Wheat. The photo this week is Mike standing in the wheat (for our neighbors in Texas - Jim, this is what Montana Wheat looks like!!!)

Movin & Working!

Aug 2-9.....We have been keeping busy this past week. Mike continues to clean out grain bins, prepping them for the wheat and barley and mowing grass around the property and local airport. Dixie packs and cleans in prep for her parents move. We went to Great Falls this past weekend and helped Dixie's brother and sister-in-law move their furniture from their house that just sold into their new condo. While there Dixie and her sister shopped for items for Mom and Dad's new home. Lots of movin going on around here! They got started with the harvest of the Winter Wheat last week and finished that up last night. We had a rain shower last night & this morning so they will not be able to start on the barley today as planned. Oh the fun of harvesting!!! The Spring Wheat is still about a week away from being ready to harvest. This was a week of occasions - our grandson, Bailey in North Carolina turned 10 on the 1st, our nephew, Shays 1st Birthday on the 2nd and Mom & Dad's 52nd Anniversary today, the 9th. The photos this week are of Mike & Shay (our nephew) in front of the tractors and the combines in the field. We took supper out to the field last night so I took a picture of the combines while unloading. Pictures of the wheat field to come next week.

Mini Vacation in the Mountains!

"Jul 20 - 31...We took a mini vacation last week to Beaver Creek Park in the Bear Paw Mountains, which is about 80 miles from Dixie's parents. It is south of Havre and is the largest county park in the US. Dixie's parents, brother and sister-in-law, and family friends all took their campers as well. We had a regular caravan! We enjoyed 5 days of sitting around the campfire, hiking, fishing and just plain relaxing. The weather has been in the 90's and even hit a 100 a couple of days. The temperature while camping in the mountains was about 10 degrees cooler than everywhere else so it was a good place to be. The hot weather is quickly ripening the grain crops so it looks like the harvest will start soon. Mike's job tomorrow will be cleaning out and prepping grain bins- a dirty job but somebody has to do it. Dixie continues to pack Mom & Dads house items. The photo's this week are from our camping trip. The sunset was while we were fishing on the lake (Mike did finally catch one small brook trout while fishing in the creek). I intended on getting a picture of Mike with his big catch but we ate him before I got to it). The others are of the creek and the mountains while hiking. Next weeks blog pictures will hopefully come from the wheat field!
